Just because the car market itself may not be large enough to support the development costs associated with the technology, there is still a need for more universal semiconductor components that can be customized for the automotive market.

On-board AI systems must also have capabilities beyond their identification so that they can use a variety of information to predict behavior. Even the relatively mature chip-level speech recognition technology, which has been developed in the field of in-car entertainment, must be significantly improved in order to be implemented in driver assistance applications.

He added: "In the future, it is also necessary to establish a standard driver's license system for the machine, proving that it has enough intelligence to be on the road."

In addition to radar and video cameras, it is expected that LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) will also become an essential device in 2025 with 35 million products. There are currently about 15 different technologies competing for this market pie.

These sensor inputs will need to be networked for accuracy and redundancy. IHS expects the sensor fusion material cost (BoM) value of the world's advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) to double by 2025. However, the cost of basic ambient sensor fusion material for parking applications is expected to be halved and to the commercial end.

Katherine Winter, vice president of autopilot at Intel, said the wave of data coming with the autopilot is expected to reach about 4 terabytes of data per day by 2020, bringing huge amounts of data to 5G communications and cloud storage demand.
